Believe it or not I still have some active records/documents in Apple Works 6! Will Pages, or anything else, convert them so I do not lose them when – if – I upgrade to Lion?

I posted this in the Mac Help section but just noticed we’ve got an iWork group now, so am re-posting here:

It looks like my old MS office 2004 apps Word and Excel will no longer work if I upgrade to Lion when it comes out, so I’m thinking of just making the jump over to the iWork apps Pages and Numbers. However, I still need the compatibility…[Read more]

    • iWork will read the MS Office stuff very well in most cases. It might display a little off kelter if they use alot of weird fonts or get nuts with all sorts of imbedded media. On rare occasions I up Open Office if I don’t care for what iWork did with a MS Office document.

    • While I have both iWork and Office on my Mac, I often just open Office format stuff in iWork and work with it. I can even save back if Office format to send back to PC users. Most of the time, they never know I edited their files with iWork.

Makes it great for working on this stuff too on iPad and iPhone. I hope an update comes out soon too.

    • Thanks for the help all! I went ahead and downloaded the iWork 30 day trial so I’ll get some practice working back and forth between the various files and formats… and I had forgotten about Open Office… that’s a good idea to get back on my machine. Thanks again!

I was hoping the update to version 4.2 of the iPad operating system would activate printing from iWork apps. Based on what I’ve seen in the beta version of the iPad OS, we aren’t going to see that capability this week. I’m hoping we get a new version of iWork with this capability soon. Steve Jobs says printing is coming to the iPad. I say…[Read more]

Is it just me or are most of you also chomping at the bit to get a new version of iLife with even more new features and simple powerful utilies?

    • Quite a bit. Not that the current iLife isn’t great, but I would love to see more features and integrations with iOS devices. I’m actually hoping that, with all the backing of HTML5, that iWeb ’11 will feature some nifty HTML5 effects built into it for easy use.

Well, this week Jonesy put me in touch with a woman who needed help with Pages. I thought she was a member, but I guess only one of Jonesy’s customers? Anyway, I’m pretty sure she and her husband are going to come to the next meeting—watch for them, “The Powell’s.” Turns out I decided Pages was NOT the solution for them… Why? Because they…[Read more]

    • Ray, I thought she had mentioned she was a member in the past. I told her she was missing out by not coming to our meetings.

I’m always looking for new ways to publish. Perhaps we can discuss this in the Mac Help SIG? I was sorta hoping we would see new iLife and iWork suites by now with new additions like the imposition you mentioned. I do use…[Read more]

      • Thanks Jonesy…I think her husband will be at the next meeting; she will be out of town. I’m going to stay in touch with her to see how she did with SwiftPublisher.

      • Good post, Ray. Of course, I had to Google ’page imposition’ to find out what you are talking about. I actually learned something. Thanks.

        • Thanks, Dave…I learned about Swift Publisher…its pretty neat! I’m really hoping for some BIG ADVANCES in the iWorks suite next month!

Ray, could you tell me what paper brand and type you used in your pass around pages with your Pages demo in July? Thanks.

    • Marty, I think (hope!) I talked to you about this earlier? Anyway, several have asked and I think what they noticed about my prints was not the paper, but the printer—I’m using the Xerox 8560 solid-ink printer and it is marvelous. With this printer I can print on any paper, including card stock; I use a variety of papers and paper weights, but…[Read more]
